What's the Canvas?

The first use of canvas in painting was dated back in the 14th century and generally indicated a painting as less important compared with paintings on panels. With time and the development of acrylic painting, canvas became the main medium for painting exploration and produced a suitable flat layer for various imagery making.

This project is about this Western invention, the Canvas, that carries a significant part of our visual culture.
I have used the back of the canvas for painting to emphasize the objectness of the painting's surface and focus on the shape of the canvas. Each artwork in this project has two sides made up of two same-size canvases stuck together from the front side. This results in two different views of the back of canvas from each side.

This is the "Canvas" project, a project in honor of the canvas.
